old news:

No show tonight!

Hey folks! We’re taking the night off… and coming at you in the next couple of days with all kinds of updates…

Meantime… there’s a ton of great shows on this evening – Impromptu Splendor is at Theatre Passe Muraille. Or you could check out the inaugural Vanguard Comedy night at Supermarket….

401? more like 40fun!

The Big Apple, baybay! Home of the least (most?) awesome arcade we’ve ever seen. We bought some pies. Looked at some llamas. Alex got his heart broken by the lack of access to the Apple itself. Sean got Julie to pose like one of those mudflap girls. Julie had clearly never seen a truck before.

Ottawa: here we come!

and just around the corner…

countdown to Capozzoli…

christian capozzoli

“Christian is the real deal. His teaching style gets to the heart of the matter and finds results, great results. He went to Harvard, this is Ivy league improv instruction. Learn the aerodynamics of yes from one of the best emerging minds in New York improvisation.”

- Alistair Cook, Artistic Director of the Vancouver International Improv Festival & !nstant Theatre

“I just did a week with Christian at VIIF 2009.
When he references Tony Danza as it relates to offers and acceptance you’ll know it was worth it. Twofold.”

- Michal Grajewski, Ghost Jail Theatre &  star of the Comedy Network’s House Party

“Christian’s work is inspiring. His emphasis on the group mind, rather than the individual’s, creates a positive workshop environment, resulting in an overall productive experience for those involved. His emphasis on building shared energy breeds positive, high energy, physical improvisation. I have seldom felt so lucky to have worked with an instructor, as I have with Mr. Capozzoli.”

- Amy Shostak, newly appointed Artistic Director of Edmonton’s Rapid Fire Theatre

“Christian is unbelievable. He’s maybe the best improv teacher I’ve ever had. Plus what he teaches is helpful for writing sketch, if you happen to want to write sketch.”

- Mark Little, Picnicface / winner of the 2009 Great Canadian Laugh-Off

“Christian Capozzoli is a powerhouse of dynamic stylings. His performance and formats burst off the stage and grab you right where you giggle. His workshops will dare to you build scene tension, story and character to limits beyond limits you once thought only cartoons are capable of.  This man is a master of theory and practise both, and a fantastic teacher.”

- Kirsten Rasmussen, Rapid Fire Theatre / woman of the world

“A close friend and respected improv colleague told me after we had just taken one of Christian’s workshops “I’ve never seen you be such a physical improviser!”. Never, she said. Christian took me back to the basics from the point of view of a veteran and made me remember and sharpen the most fundamental and important improv skills I thought I had forgotten.”

- Tim Daugulis, Ghost Jail Theatre / The Local Singles

“Capozzoli’s instruction is ideal for improvisers who need to examine (or reexamine) the importance listening to each other, point of view and heightening. Though these elements seem basic, in Capozzoli’s fast-paced workshop, you’ll ask yourself if you’ve actually been using these effectively. He’s incredibly intelligent and creative. Capozzoli uses memorable metaphors when discussing the improv art form so that complex improv theories are very accessible. Even in the shortest of workshops, you learn lots because he keeps you working, thinking, laughing.”

- Jess Grant, Big in Japan / WDWMKR

this thursday… the zombies arrive…

turned poster
Sean Tabares’ night of improvised horrors & flesh-eating delights returns to the Bad Dog Theatre (138 Danforth Ave.) on Thursday, October 29th to tickle and chill once more.  The show is at 8pm and tickets are $10. (For reservations, call (416) 988-8648.)

In a city suddenly being overrun by zombies, five humans find themselves have caged themselves in a makeshift bunker, to stave off the surrounding undead.

The only problem is that, from the inside, one of them will be TURNED!

The audience will have advanced knowledge of which character will turn, but the actors won’t know until it happens.

This time, the hopeless trapped are:

Mark Cotoia
Jen Goodhue
Kayla Lorette
Rob Norman
Sean Tabares

WARNING: You may not be leaving as a human anymore…

PROJECTproject ghostshow

We’re heading back to Kensington Market for another blowout at Bread & Circus (299 Augusta Ave., just south of College St.).  And we’re bringing friends…

First of all, sketch darlings FRENZY join us to bring you “spooky improv”. Grow your nails out… you’re gonna need them to bite on.

Then, the PROJECTproject core cast (Alex Tindal, Sarah Hillier, Sean Tabares, Bob Banks & Julie Dumais) is thrilled to be collaborating again with Toronto Poetry Slam’s David Silverberg… and… for the first time, with Vancouver poet & musician Barbara Adler. Barbara was the youngest poet to ever land a spot on the prestigious Vancouver Slam team. She is a member of the widely acclaimed music-spoken word band The Fugitives and this year she was Vancouver’s CBC Poetry Face Off champion.

Oh… then we ghost-drink. And ghost-dance.

Miss this and be sure to die. Eventually.

Festival dinner at the resto-bar with the biggest patio we’ve ever seen.

One more night of shows in Montreal… but first we needed to eat another pile of fries with Des & Dave from Crush and the rest of the festival performers/team.

Angel.

We had a blast last night, taking in sets from Montreal’s longest running improv troupe: On the Spot; the solo virtuosity of Chicago’s incredible Andy Eninger ( can’t wait to see him again tonight!); and a full-on improvised French farce ( complete with costumes, makeup. & delightful gameplay) from Austin’s Parallelogramophonograph. That’s them onstage in the picture.

Our own set went over well… Folks seemed to be digging “Pushpins” and we had a ton of fun playing. (Got the suggestion of “angel” and built a seaside town in the shade of a great basilica where the residents of the local rectory had a lucrative secret, “intense relaxation” hammocks were a primary industry, the beach bar – and most everything else – kept catching fire, surfers had no scruples, canasta was a violent game and almost everyone became ghosts in the end.) Very happy.

Now the question is: what to do tonight? Our good pals from Ottawa’s Crush Improv are here, meaning that Superstar DJ AL Connors could play with us if we decided to revisit one of our favourite projects: iProj. We’ll see…
